What is Genetic Counseling?
Genetic counselors help families understand what genetic test results mean. Here's what they do, how they work with your pediatrician, and how they can support you.
Genetic counselors have specialized training in medical genetics and counseling to guide and support patients seeking information on genetic conditions that may affect their family. Genetic counselors can interpret and guide you on your child’s genetic test results.
Genetic counselors are not medical doctors. They work with you and your pediatrician to understand:
- Your genetic risks based on your family history
- Your genetic risks for certain conditions based on genetic screening results
- What the results of genetic tests may mean for you and your child
Genetic counselors provide support and empower you with information as you make decisions for you and your child.
